Architectural CGI | Design Development Visualisation
The Brief
Gloucester City Council commissioned The Pixel Workshop to create four CGIs for the regeneration of Greyfriars, the city’s historic quarter. With local concerns that redevelopment could compromise the area’s heritage and character, the Council needed compelling visuals to demonstrate how the proposals would preserve the past while creating vibrant new community spaces.
The four images featured a new Cultural Hub with theatre, galleries and creative spaces; a revitalised indoor market and food hall; the updated Eastside Market exterior; and a transformed Bowling Green with landscaped gardens, outdoor theatre, play areas and cycle facilities.
The Challenge
The CGIs needed to communicate the benefits of regeneration while reassuring local stakeholders that the area’s historic identity would be respected.
However, several design elements were still evolving. This presented an opportunity to use CGI not simply to illustrate the proposals, but to help the design team make important decisions.
Key challenges included:
- Heritage preservation: Showing how historic architecture could be enhanced with contemporary design.
- Unresolved design details: Exploring alternative layouts, materials and finishes.
- Public engagement: Creating accessible, convincing visuals to communicate the Council’s vision.
CGI as a design tool
One of the project’s most valuable outcomes was how the CGIs actively supported the design process.
For the Eastside Market exterior, the final vinyl graphics had not yet been designed. Our CGIs enabled the team to experiment with different treatments, mark up ideas and assess their impact on the historic façade.
Similarly, the Indoor Market involved comparing traditional and contemporary market frontages, alongside alternative seating arrangements and furniture styles. Seeing these options visualised helped the team decide on their preferred approach.
For the Cultural Hub, our CGIs also helped refine the evolving design of the bar, café and surrounding spaces.

THE solution
Working closely with Gloucester City Council’s design team, we developed four detailed CGIs that brought the regeneration proposals to life.
Through an iterative process of visualisation, feedback and refinement, we helped the team explore design options while maintaining the architectural accuracy and visual quality needed for public presentation.
The imagery balanced preserved brickwork and historic features with contemporary interiors, landscaping and new community facilities, illustrating how heritage and modern development could work together.
THE RESULT
The final four CGIs presented a compelling vision for Greyfriars, communicating how the area could be revitalised without losing its historic character.
Crucially, the process also helped the Council’s design team evaluate options and resolve design details before finalising the proposals.
The project demonstrates how architectural CGI can be far more than a presentation tool: it can become an integral part of the design process, helping clients make confident decisions and communicate their vision.
